The urgency of climate change has made a global agreement to accelerate net zero carbon emission development. Building energy efficiency and decarbonization is a key sector to achieve carbon neutrality in a whole society. This paper analyses policies, standards and case studies in the U.S. to promote zero carbon buildings. It summarizes the U.S. federal level to state, local governments, as well as professional societies’ efforts to systematically develop low carbon buildings. This paper focuses on policies such as building energy efficiency, electrification, on-site renewable energy deployment, and improving low carbon buildings’ techno-economic performance. The goal of this study is to provide references on future carbon neutrality development for China’s building sector.
